Our History

 

The Guguletu Reformed Presbyterian Church building was dedicated in 1976.  The congregation was part of Tiyo Soga Church situated in Langa until 1988 and was renamed JL Zwane Memorial Presbyterian Church in 1992. 

First impressions as Rev. Dr Spiwo Xapile and Family started in Guguletu

In 1988 when at the University of Aberdeen, Scotland, Rev Spiwo Xapile received a call from Guguletu Reformed Presbyterian Church.  The congration waited for him and his family until August 1989 when they arrived in Cape Town to start work.

Rev Spiwo Xapile was already an experienced minister ordained in 1981 at New Brighton in Port Elizabeth and had worked in Uitenhage, Somerset East and Butterworth (Gcuwa Congregation) but was shocked by the extent of poverty and cash-less-ness when he arrived in Cape Town. "All I saw around me was nothing and my strong faith in the God who created out of nothing helped me lead the church and the community forward".
