The reality of HIV and Aids in our lives continuously shapes
and sharpens our responses. The greatest killer of people
living with HIV has been stigma, discrimination, fear of the
unknown and ignorance on the disease itself. Our support group
has improved people’s outlook to life by giving them
opportunities to share their struggles and exposing them to
more information on HIV and Aids. Those who have been living
with HIV for a long time have stood in solidarity with those
who have just known about their HIV positive status making
them stronger each day. The regular meetings have given the
members a safe place to express their fears and joys without
fear of being judged.
What makes our support group unique is the spiritual trust
which forms part of all our activities. People are acknowledged
not only as suffering bodies but also as unique and special
beings in the eyes of God. Each session is begun with either
a biblical reflection or a liturgy that overtly highlights
the challenges of living with HIV. Members are encouraged
to write reflections on their spiritual journeys and document
their prayers. This holistic approach which begins with providing
the members with balanced meals, then space and skills for
spiritual and emotional support, has led to most of them joining
our church. The regular slot which is reserved for HIV and
Aids education every Sunday morning service, has also made
our congregation and community more supportive and committed
to making a difference. Most members of the support groups
have also shared their stories during this slot. We also have support groups for caregivers and orphans which
are also run along the same lines.
