“FIGHTING HIV/AIDS THROUGH MUSIC WITH A PURPOSE”
Teaching people about HIV/AIDS can be challenging.
Traditional methods, like lectures and presentations, do not always work.
J.L. Zwane Siyaya brings HIV/AIDS education to people through music, dance and
theater.
J.L. Zwane Siyaya is a performance group made up of musicians from local Townships
surrounding Cape Town with a few coming from the Eastern Cape. Siyaya’s music is
a fusion of traditional African songs, opera, jazz and pop. Nearly all of their
songs are original, with music, lyrics and choreography by Mr Magatyana and the
group. Through a highly entertaining collection of songs, scenes and dances,
Siyaya’s shows teach the ABC’s of HIV/AIDS education – Abstain, Be Faithful, use
Condoms. Their moving and surprising funny but still educational performances
pierce through the powerful stigma of HIV/AIDS exposing the myths and risks of
the disease. They perform regularly at schools, churches, community centres,
health clinics and public events throughout South Africa.
